Martin McClellan
Brevard County School Board - District 1
America First Party Of Florida
Election Date - September 5, 2006
Top Issues
- Teachers having to pay from their salaries for classroom supplies
- Part-time School Board earning more than a first year full-time teacher. (This isn't right)
- Schools are teaching the FCAT test instead of reading, writing, and arithmetic. This must stop.
Candidate Statement -
I am married to a beautiful supportive wife, a father to one wonderful stepdaughter and two responsible adult sons (twins) in the military. Christian, is a computer technician in the Air Force and James is an electronic technician on the U.S.S. Eisenhower. Lisa is in college studying to be a biologist.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Charter Oak College in Connecticut and a Master of Science in Space Systems from Florida Institute of Technology. I am currently employed as a Test Project Engineer at Kennedy Space Center working on the Space Shuttle program.
Currently, all classroom supplies are bought by the teachers or provided by the students soliciting the neighborhoods, selling small merchandise, candies, or various combinations there of. A school board member makes $5000.00 a year more than a first year fulltime teacher. This is inappropriate; given the fact that it is a part-time position. If I am elected I will donate that $5000.00 to one of the schools in my district so that at least some teachers won't have to dip into their pockets for supplies. We must get the votes necessary to provide for supplies as a line item in the budget.
I will not vote the board a raise until such time as a first year fulltime teacher's salary is substantially above that of a School Board member.
My opponent has made the statement in a school board meeting, that he is not being paid what he is worth. My contention is that he is now missing the point! School Board is about public service not his salary!
Additionally, I will be working with area legislators to correct the FCAT situation. The teachers should be teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic - not a test. Some schools have begun teaching the FCAT, so they can keep the same amount of extra (bonus) money coming into the school. Others are teaching it because of the requirements placed upon them for having a D or F grade from the FCAT in the previous year.
In listening to the parents while collecting my petitions, many have expressed anger and frustration about the FCAT. Fixing this will be one of my highest priorities.
Working together from the ground up a great deal can be achieved but it must be done from the ground up! Many people have already lost hope of ever defeating the two corrupt major parties; but working together we can make a difference and return this nation to the Constitutional Republic the Founding Fathers meant it to be.
Please join me with contributions of $5.00 or $10.00. If each of you would sacrifice this amount, it will go a long way toward enabling me to run an effective campaign. The cost of a single yard sign with wire frame is $7.50; I will need 500 of these signs to start. Door hangers and cards are estimated to be $1,000 per 5,000 and I will need 10,000 of these.
All donations will be used for the campaign purposes only. Thank you in advance for your most generous support and contributions.
