END SLAVERY, PASS THE FAIR TAX
Boulder, CO -The platform of the America First Party calls for returning our
tax system to one that reflects the original intent and wisdom of the
framers of the Constitution. In support of this position, the America First
Party has passed a resolution supporting HR 2525, "The Fair Tax Act of
2001".
National Chairman Dan Charles states, "The American people deserve a tax
system that rewards savings and investment, not one that rewards gluttony
and penalizes success. We deserve a tax system where we choose to be taxed,
not that relies on fear and coercion. We deserve a tax system that puts
working families and American jobs ahead of the moneyed special interests.
It is time for a tax system that doesn't promote divisions among our
citizens. It is time for the Fair Tax."
"The income tax has caused problems from its inception. It puts taxpayers
into the category of slaves to an almost autonomous agency that invents its
own rules and enforces them with para-military tactics. The Fair Tax will
restore power to the states, by making them the tax collectors, and make
sure that everybody pays their fair share, while protecting families
struggling to get by," said Iowa State Chairman David Doyle.
The 16th Amendment never set limits on the amount of money that could be
taken from the incomes of citizens. With the advent of withholding taxes
and with the hidden tax costs passed on consumers, most Americans do not
realize how much the government costs. The consequence of this is the
irresistible urge to increase the rate of taxes to pay for an increasingly
bloated federal government.
The America First Party believes that tariffs and excise taxes on foreign
goods should be the main source of income for this country. The balance
should come from uniform usage fees and retail sales taxes. The Party also
holds that property should not be taxed, except at the time of purchase via
the retail sales tax. Hence, it holds that property, capital gain, and
inheritance taxes should also be eliminated.
This national sales tax would also move the government out of the personal
business of its citizens. No longer would the Federal Government ask for
your occupation, income, social security number, or other personal
information. By taxing purchases, the Fair Tax would tax the many who avoid
taxes by under-reporting or noncompliance with present income disclosure
system. By having collection occur at the state level, instead of the
federal level, the IRS and its strong-armed enforcement procedures would be
eliminated. The growing dread at the intrusion of the IRS would be
eliminated. Our Founding Fathers never intended citizens to fear their
government.
America First Party Treasurer, Maureen McHugh added, "A former IRS auditor
recently stated that the tax code is a disaster and so complex that no
American can understand it. The time has come to make April 15 just another
day. We need a tax that eliminates the assault on our paychecks. We need a
tax that is fair to all the citizens--not just those who can afford high
priced tax accountants to lead them through the loopholes."
