Common Sense Saves 2nd Amendment

Boulder, CO -- The America First Party congratulates the United States Senate for voting down S. 1805, the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act", after it was loaded down with gun control amendments. Like millions of Americans, the party is disgusted to see Democrats and Republicans act together to burden this important legislation with anti-American amendments like the Feinstein (D) "Assault Weapons" Ban Extension and the McCain (R) Gun Show Ban.

National Chair Dan Charles stated, "As a member of the Keep and Bear Arms Coalition against the so-called 'assault weapons' ban, we were saddened to see the Feinstein Amendment pass. However, we were not surprised to see the Republicans aid in its passage. The Constitution says that, 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' It does not then say, 'unless the weapon looks mean.' Americans have a right to access the tools they need to protect themselves, their families, their property, and their country. Take away this God given right, and only servitude follows."

Platform Committee and Colorado State Chair Larry Carroll continued, "Firearms are nothing more than a tool. For now, we will need to rely on the common sense of jurors to protect manufacturers of this legal product necessary to the security of our nation, our people, and our liberties. I am outraged that some of my fellow attorneys would abuse our justice system to blame those who make the tools, instead of those who misuse the tools. We call upon Congress to pass a clean bill that protects all manufacturers from specious lawsuits that seek to bankrupt American industries. Having deep-pockets should not make manufacturers liable for other people's irresponsibility."

National Press Secretary Romelle Winters added, "People who support both the Second Amendment and President Bush should reconsider their allegiance to the President. He has made it clear that he would sign a bill that includes an extension to the 'assault weapons' ban set to expire next year. In doing so, he has made it clear that he is no friend of the Second Amendment. A President ought not to play politics with our freedom."
