Cowardice and Moral Confusion in Massachusetts

Boulder, CO - The America First Party rejects the legitimacy of homosexual marriage licenses issued today in Massachusetts. The United States Constitution guarantees each state a republican form of government, which is inconsistent with lawmaking by judicial fiat. We call upon Governor Mitt Romney to stand up for marriage and take immediate, if belated, steps to prevent this perversion of constitutional processes. We call upon the good citizens of the Commonwealth and the other states of the Union to rise up and seize the reigns of self-government from the tyrannical judges and limp-wristed leaders who have betrayed us.

National Chairman Dan Charles stated, "This is a sad day, not just for Massachusetts, but for our entire nation. The traditional marriage of one man to one woman has been the cornerstone of civilization for thousands of years. The notion that the people make laws, either through their elected representatives or by referendum, is the cornerstone of our form of government. These two foundations of the United States of America are being attacked by a small special interest group which cannot get its way at the ballot box. Instead, they have resorted to dictatorship by the judicial branch. The moral confusion and cowardice of Republican Governor Mitt Romney has allowed this day to come."

America First Party of Massachusetts State Chairman Jonathan Hill stated, "Those among us who stand for traditional marriage and constitutional governance must remain vigilant. If we give up this fight, then tyranny wins. Massachusetts was where the first shots were fired in a revolution to found a nation based on the Natural Law defined by God. Now it has become yet another battlefield in a revolution to replace this foundation with the tyranny of the whims of a few morally confused judges." Mr. Hill is also Vice Chairman of the America First National Committee.

National Party Building Chairman and longtime Beacon Hill resident Tom White added, "At election time, Republicans talk about standing up to judicial dictatorship, but when faced with the opportunity, they exhibit nothing but cowardice. Governor Romney is but the latest example. We call upon the Governor to take steps necessary to prevent our Commonwealth from becoming Gay Las Vegas. Governor Romney should use his constitutional authority to prevent issuance of marriage licenses to out-of-state residents and homosexual couples. He should tell the Massachusetts Supreme Court that they may have the power to nullify unconstitutional laws, but they do not have the constitutional authority to write new laws. However, we cannot expect this sort of action from him. He does not have to face the voters this year."

Mr. Charles concluded, "At its founding, our nation discarded the tyranny of King George III. Now, Chief Justice Margaret Marshall has declared herself queen and we have been reminded that a single rogue judge can do great damage to the fabric of our nation. The slow process of constitutional amendment has not saved marriage in Massachusetts. A rogue federal judge may do the same nationwide unless swift action is taken. We call upon Congress and President Bush to focus their energies on re-passing the Defense of Marriage Act, amending it to exclude it from judicial review as they are empowered to do under Article III, Section 2 of the United States Constitution."
