Partial Birth Abortion Act Showcases Republican Impotence and Indifference
Boulder, CO - Sadly, last week's Supreme Court decision upholding the Partial Birth Abortion Ban of 2003 unambiguously supports previous evil precedents which affirm "the right of a woman to choose to have an abortion," and which allow doctors to kill the unborn child whenever pregnancy involves risk to a woman's "life or health." The majority opinion stated that the Act will not ban abortion at any stage of pregnancy, but will only require other procedures, like killing the fetus via injection immediately prior to delivery, to be substituted for the outlawed procedure.
Although groups like the National Right to Life Committee trumpet the decision as a victory, it in fact does nothing to advance respect for the rights and dignity of the unborn child. With references to "the life of the fetus that may become a child," the decision arbitrarily denies the humanity of the unborn despite overwhelming biological evidence to the contrary. The five justices in the majority also took the previous Casey decision as a guiding principle, and in so doing explicitly affirmed that the state "may not prohibit any woman from making the ultimate decision to terminate her pregnancy."
National Chairman Jonathan Hill stated: "It is time for groups like the National Right to Life Committee and the majority of pro-lifers to rethink their attachment to the Republican Party. Their huge investment has brought virtually no positive returns, but much loss of life at home and abroad. By providing stalwart support to one of the major parties, pro-lifers are hastening our nation's demise. When the quality of most major party candidates falls below acceptable levels, the only likely solution is to cultivate better candidates and build the organizational support structures to get them elected. Until decent people change their political strategy, our nation is unlikely to recover."
National Secretary John Pittman Hey stated: "The Carhart decision continues the status quo -- the shredding of the unborn child's dignity and continued abuse of the Constitution's Commerce Clause. The ban is not designed to stop abortion, but to substitute another form of homicide. This is no pro-life victory! Rather, it showcases Republican grandstanding, as well as a wanton indifference to unborn life."
