Petition by Patriotic Americans
Against the WarTo the President and Congress of the United States of America:
As patriotic citizens who love our country, we stand together now to exercise our Constitutional right to petition our government.
We implore you not to take our nation to war against Iraq. Our plea is based upon the total absence of any moral or Constitutional basis for such war at this time.
The power and might of the United States when she goes to war is awesome. When she makes war, death rains down upon combatants and innocent civilians alike. Our nation was founded upon the principle of the sanctity of all human life. Therefore, our nation has a responsibility to make war only upon the strictest of moral standards.
The United States of America is justified in the making of war only when the safety and security of our people and our homeland are imperiled. The United States has no cause for war with Iraq, her people, or their leaders, unless and until that nation lifts its hand against our people, our homes, or our nation, or aids those who do. As there is no such provocation on the part of the nation of Iraq, there can be no just, moral, legal, or practical cause for armed conflict between our two sovereign nations.
We stand united in our belief that the current plan to launch an unjustified war against Iraq, without the mandatory Congressional Declaration of War, is repugnant to our Constitution, the ideals of our nation, basic principles of morality and justice, and is destructive of the peace and security of the United States.
Therefore, we, the undersigned patriotic citizens of the United State of America hereby declare:
- We deplore the growing efforts to foment hatred and fear of the nation of Iraq solely for the purpose of fanning the flames of war hysteria.
- We denounce as unwise the notion that our nation should enter into adventurous and undeclared wars, because such wars sully the rightness of our cause, damage our reputation abroad, imperil our brave fighting men and women, and shed innocent blood.
- We contend that the United States should not enter into war to defend the honor or authority of the United Nations, nor to further the interests or safety of other nations or peoples.
- We demand that our government focus its attention on the task of defending our nation, by securing her borders and defending our Constitution and Bill of Rights against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
- We insist that should any President violate the Constitution by taking this nation to war without a Congressional Declaration of War, he ought to be impeached immediately and removed from office.
